KLOA, Inc. was retained by The University of Chicago Medicine to perform a comprehensive traffic study of the medical center campus. At the time of the 2009 study, new facilities were being planned, were under construction, or had recently been completed such as the Comer Children’s Hospital (CCH) addition, Center for Care and Discovery (CCD), Center for Biomedical Discovery, and 61st Street/Drexel Avenue parking garage. Traffic conditions on campus were congested, particularly within the core area around the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM).
The study evaluated all significant intersections on the medical center campus, projected traffic demands from the new facilities, and analyzed potential street system and traffic management changes. Key recommendations included the design of Maryland Avenue as a pick-up/drop-off route beneath the CCD, traffic signal installation at Cottage Grove Avenue/58th Street, street channelization and parking modifications on 57th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, and traffic management measures on the DCAM driveway. The study also included a wayfinding plan for the CCD, CCH, Mitchell Hospital, DCAM, and Emergency Departments.
When the University incorporated additional land areas for a new parking garage, ambulatory care clinic, and other facilities in 2013, KLOA was retained to complete a follow-up Traffic & Parking Study. The study was updated again in 2016 to incorporate the relocation of the adult emergency room and a Level 1 trauma center into the first floor of the new parking garage. A subarea study was most recently performed in 2023 for a new freestanding cancer center.
