Kenig, Lindgren, O’Hara, Aboona, Inc. (KLOA, Inc.) was retained as part of the Ratio Design team to update the Comprehensive Plan for the Village of Calumet Park. KLOA, Inc. prepared the mobility component of the plan, which comprised an evaluation of the community’s existing transportation system and a Transportation Plan of improvements to address system deficiencies. The plan is multi-modal and addresses all elements of the transportation system, including the roadway network, public transit system, rail and river freight, bicycle and pedestrian system, and first mile/last mile and sustainable travel options.
Elements of the transportation plan included road diets on Ashland Avenue and Vermont Street, improved lighting along 124th Street, road capacity and access improvements on 119th Street and 127th Street, reconstruction and/or two-way conversions of industrial streets such as Marshfield Avenue and Winchester Avenue, railroad grade crossing safety improvements along the Metra Electric District line and the CSX railway, the potential rerouting of Pace service to interface with the Ashland Avenue Metra station, new bus shelters, ADA compliance upgrades at the Ashland and Blue Island Metra stations, coordination on future PULSE BRT service along South Halsted Street, a full network of interconnected bicycle facilities, bicycle parking locations, the infill of sidewalk gaps, and pedestrian safety improvements at intersections.
